Spanish artist Mario Santamaria has a fascinating project titled ‘The Camera in the Mirror’ that features Google’s Street View camera in a series of bizarre self-portraits.
The device comprises panoramic cameras mounted on a motorized trolley that are used to capture high resolution, 360-degree views of museum and gallery interiors around the world. The photographs are taken as part of Google’s Art Project, which was launched three years ago.
Santamaria went on a virtual tour of some of the 250 museums the camera has documented, amassing a collection of Google Street View screenshots in which the camera catches its own reflection in a mirror.
A revealing behind-the-scenes look at Google’s project, the lone machine’s accidental self-portraits give off an eerie feel to the proceedings.
