Photographer Pays Tribute To Her Late Mother In Poignant Photo Series

After Brooklyn-based photographer Jennifer Loeber’s mother passed away suddenly in February 2013, she found herself overcome with sadness at her mother’s belongings.

An only child, her mother’s death devastated her, and she was seized by a deep need to hold on to “the most mundane” of her possessions.

To cope with her grief, Loeber turned to compiling objects like a tube of used lipstick and a hairbrush, and paired each one with an old photograph of her mother that related to the item.

Her artistic approach proved cathartic; in connecting possessions to moments frozen in time, the photographic memorial brought back happy memories.

In addition, sharing the images on Instagram helped lessen the sentimentality Loeber attached to her mother’s belongings, providing her with emotional release.

Titled ‘Left Behind’, her project is a beautiful and poignant tribute to her mother.
