Photographer Brenda Ann Kenneally visited her hometown of Troy, New York, to capture the residents’ struggles of living with poverty.

The city is plagued with “serious social issues”, where 70% of poor families are headed by single mothers.

Kenneally takes poignant portraits of her subjects as they pose in their homes, revealing their stories and family background to the world. She also tracks the lives of her subjects as they grow up, find new lovers, and have children.

Take a look at her work below.
