The ‘Hairy Legs Club’ Tumblr is a blog dedicated to photographs of women who have stopped shaving their legs.
It has been around for four years, and invites women from all walks of life to submit pictures of their unshaven legs, as well as the stories behind their decision.
For some women, having hairy legs is a way of striving towards self-love and acceptance, while others view it as taking control over their bodies, and not being subject to other people’s opinion of how they should look like.
One message read “I abhor shaving and I feel better about myself since I stopped shaving and I’m not going to let other people police my body”, while another stated “I hate shaving so much, so it has been very liberating to finally decide to stop shaving. Society needs to learn to accept that women grow hair, and it’s not gross, unattractive, manly, or unsanitary. Go women!”
The blog has received messages from women who dislike how society makes them feel it’s wrong or unfeminine not to shave. Some admitted they shave to fit conventional standards of beauty.
It has also received support from women who shave their legs, but feel heartened that there are other women out there who are doing what they want with their bodies.
