United Airlines has updated its app to allow international passengers to check-in for their flights by scanning their passports using their smartphones.
The update is available for iOS and Android, and is reportedly the first of its kind in North America.
The new feature uses the camera on passengers’ smartphones to capture their passport information, while a third party credential management service called Jumio scans the information for verification as an added security measure.
Once the information has been verified, passengers can obtain a printable boarding pass. However, those who require additional travel documents such as visas are required to check-in at the airport as per normal.
Passengers can check-in via the app within 24 hours of their departure.
