Los Angeles-based photographer Ryan Schude has a fun on-going series titled ‘Them and Theirs’ where he captures quirky portraits of people and the cars they drive.
Schude started his series while studying at the San Francisco Art Institute in the early ’00s, where he went around photographing people who had vanity license plates on their vehicles.
His project has since evolved, and he recently revisited it in the past few years, capturing over 40 portraits so far.
In an interview with PDN, Schude explained his concept as being “documentary style” with his subjects “posing as themselves or a character loosely based off them.”
This approach allows him more creative freedom in shooting; some portraits are simple snapshots, while others have a full-fledged narrative requiring the use of props and lighting.
Schude seeks out people through friends and acquaintances, and also approaches strangers on the street to take part in his series.
Check out more portraits at his website, and if you’re interested in being part of his project, you can contact him here.
