Finnish designer Tuomas Markunpoika has recently completed a project to make vases out of pencils.
The pencils are first glued together to form blocks, which are then stacked together to form a solid piece.
Markunpoika then drills a hole before running it through a lathe to shape it into a vase. After which, he paints them with a layer of lacquer to ensure that the graphite does not rub off.
He shared on his website that he felt “the beauty of the pencil as an object seems to go unnoticed if utilized only for their primary purpose”, hence, his decision to “explores the relationship of a mass produced ‘tool’ and its individual purpose”.
The artist’s amazing limited edition creations come in three shapes with different color options and can be purchased through Gallery FUMI.
