Amsterdam-based designer Jólan Van der Wiel has started a project that uses magnetism to create unusual art structures.

Called ‘Magnetism meets Architecture’, the project involves mixing water to clay and metal powder to create its magnetic properties.

Using a rotating surface, he sculpts the clay on it and passes a magnetic field through, adding layers as it dries and hardens. Fresh clay that is added will be attracted to the harden clay, allowing the sculpture to flow upwards and remain suspended.

Van der Wiel even managed to successfully recreate a small model of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí’s La Sagrada Familia.
