Back in 1964, American photographer Duane Michals shot a series of black-and-white photographs that showed the normally bustling New York City completely devoid of people.
Taken in the wee hours of the morning when there were no pedestrians or vehicles, they show its streets, subways and establishments eerily empty.
Michals was inspired by French photographer Eugène Atget’s similar collection of photographs of Paris, and wanted to recreate the look of “twentieth-century New York in the early morning through his nineteenth-century eyes.”
