Modern Portraits Made With Old Photographic Method To Appear "Vintage"





Photographer Jody Ake’s captivating portraits will transport you to the past in an instant, despite being recently taken.



Ake uses the “wet collodion process”, an old photographic method that was invented in 1851, for his portraits and other works like nudes and landscape images.



To create the rich, vintage-like tones in his images, Ake coats a glass plate with collodion and exposes the plate while it is still wet. After an ambrotype forms on the glass, a layer of black velvet is applied to produce the final image.



The Portland-based photographer also mixes the required chemicals for each exposure by hand.
