According to this group of creatives, “from a football perspective this is a great World Cup, but from a designer’s perspective it’s not that great”. To make viewing the matches more enjoyable for the fans, Guus ter Beek, Tayfun Sarier, Jordan Cheung and digital illustration agency George Grace Represents have given the World Cup a flat design makeover.
For their World Cup redesign, they aimed to create a easier to read, more visually pleasing interface that would improve the experience of watching the game on TV screens. To do that, they removed “the abundance of clumsy gradients” on existing sports channels and put together a minimalist, attractive interface for football television.
This concept applied the flat design aesthetic to various visual design elements of the World Cup, including score and time display, in-game notifications, team formations and even updates on the weather.
