Photographer Robbie Kaye’s series ‘Beauty & Wisdom’ started out as a photo essay of women aged 70 and older, but soon morphed into a statement on beauty double standards and ageism.

In an interview with Mashable, she said the women she met carried the scars of their trials and face daily battles against a culture that is still very much fixated on youthful beauty.

Kaye traveled around America to photograph and interview dozens of women who patronise beauty parlors weekly, a tradition that she laments is fast disappearing.

Meeting these women gave Kaye a new perspective on growing older. “The more I photographed, the more denial I had to strip away from my own ideals and vanity and face the reality that I, too, if the powers that be allow, will be aging as well.”

Her photographs are compiled in a book which is available on Amazon, and Kaye intends to make a documentary film containing her interviews.
