Stanley Kubrick’s Comments On Saul Bass’ ‘The Shining’ Poster Drafts

Film-maker Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining not only continues to be must-watch years after it was first made, but it also have one of the most recognizable posters in the industry—and as many would know, this bright yellow design is created by legendary graphic designer Saul Bass.

What you may not know is that this poster was preceded by several other drafts before this now-famous poster was finally accepted by Kubrick—website Design Buddy recently featured a collection of these rejected draft posters, which come complete with handwritten remarks by Kubrick about why they are not good enough.

Providing a fascinating peek into the working relationship between the iconic director and designer, these images are courtesy of Bobby Solomon of website “The Fox Is Black”, who captured them at a traveling art exhibition for Stanley Kubrick.

Head over here to learn more about these draft posters, and to view a couple of letters Saul Bass wrote to Stanley Kubrick, in which he explained his design concepts.

We think that the best part of these insightful letters is Bass’ epic signature, which includes a caricature of his own face on a fish’s body—don’t you agree?
