Book Spines Playfully Arranged To Form Poetry

In her ongoing project ‘Sorted Books’, US-based artist Nina Katchadourian organizes books not by their authors names nor alphabetically, but by their titles.

Over many years in many different places—libraries and bookshelves at people’s homes—she culls through the collection of books, pulls particular titles and groups the books into clusters, so that when the arranged titles are read out in sequence they form funny, poignant poems.

“The final results are shown either as photographs of the book clusters or as the actual stacks themselves,” she writes, “shown on the shelves of the library they were drawn from. Taken as a whole, the clusters from each sorting aim to examine that particular library’s focus, idiosyncrasies, and inconsistencies—a cross-section of that library’s holdings.”
