Most Powerful Telescope To Date: Launching Next Week

The earth's most powerful telescope ever built is slated to be up-and-running as of March 13, 2013.

The launch of the Atacama Large Millimeter/Sub Millimeter Array (ALMA) means that we will soon be able to find out what goes on when stars, billions of miles away, come to life. Essentially, we will be able to see beyond our conception of 'time,' into the history of our universe.

It operates on the combined power of several massive antennae to collate valuable information about the universe beyond our planet, including galaxy formation and the weather on other planets in neighboring solar systems.

The ALMA is housed in the high desert of northern Chile, which is about 16,500 feet above sea level.
