Tokyo-based artist Tsuyoshi Ozawa has produced a series of photographs—depicting women of various nationalities holding up a vegetable “weapon”—to highlight the absurdities of war.
His work, titled “Vegetable Weapons”, has been an ongoing project since 2001, and he has shoot in Japan, Iceland, Uganda, and China to date.
After he finds a local model who is willing to be photographed, he then asks for her help in gathering vegetables and the other ingredients needed to create a typical local dish—he then creatively arranges the food in the shape of a weapon and photographs his subjects holding the vegetables in the style of war portraits.
Once the photos are taken, they cook and eat the fake “weapons” and partake in a local dish together.
“Vegetable Weapons” shows how humor, art and food enables one to talk about serious subjects like war and violence.
