The Whittington family from San Diego has created a video with a heartwarming message that encourages acceptance. Titled ‘Ryland's Story’, the video is about the Whittington’s first child Ryland, who was born transgender.
Brought up as a girl, Ryland would scream that she was a boy “as soon as she could speak”, and displayed repulsion to anything feminine.
More than “just a phase”, Ryland showed signs of shame, and even said, “When the family dies, I will cut my hair so I can be a boy.”
The Whittingtons discovered the high rates of suicide attempts amongst transgender individuals resulted from the lack of societal acceptance. Refusing to let such a fate become that of their child, they embraced and accepted Ryland’s true self.
They then made a seven-minute YouTube clip, which has garnered more than 3 million hits in less than a week, hoping that “this world will become a more loving and accepting place for Ryland and the entire LGBTQ community”.
