Mother to a 23-year-old with autism, Debbie Rasiel embarked on a two-year-long project, traveling all over the world in a bid to capture photos of children with autism.
She told Huffington Post: “I wanted to offer those not familiar with autism an opportunity to see what autism looks like, a safe space where social mores would not prevent them from staring.”
Many of her subjects were reached via the Global Autism Project, while there were also others who wanted a photographer for personal portraits. Titled ‘Picturing Autism’, her works were recently featured in a Manhattan exhibition.
