Astronauts can now enjoy a hot comforting cup of coffee in space—Italian coffee company Lavazza and Argotec, that specializes in aerospace systems design, has collaborated with Italian Space Agency to produce the first capsule-based espresso system.
The “ISSpresso” is a 20kg coffeemaker that will be installed at the International Space Station, to create a socializing hub and cafe for astronauts on mission to mingle and relax.
Capable of defying the pressure in space, a special steel pipe carries the water through a process of heating, and dispenses the capsuled coffee into a pouch where the astronaut drinks from using a straw.
Not only will the capsule system be able to prepare a cup of espresso, but also other hot beverages such as tea, and even broth to rehydrate food.
