How Pentagram Made The Logo Of Penguin Random House

When publishing giants Penguin and Random House merged last year, they took on an interim identity with a logo that depicts the famous penguin standing next to a house—needless to say, this is not good enough for “the world’s largest book publisher”.



The company engaged renowned graphic designer Michael Beirut of Pentagram to craft their new identity, one that would reflect the history of both Penguin and Random House, and not dilute their heritage—together, both companies have 250 imprints under them, each with its own unique logo.



In the end, Beirut decided on a “simple, elegant” wordmark that spells out the new corporate entity’s name in three lines—the best part about this new logo is that it could be paired easily with any of the existing 250 imprint logos.
