As a warm-up to the 2014 FIFA World Cup which kicks off in Brazil on 12 June, British design website It’s Nice That and its sister agency INT Works have reimagined iconic moments in World Cup history as fun five-second videos.
Titled ‘Fives’, they highlight the fact that some of the most memorable footballing moments are not who won, but rather individual strokes of genius, hilarity and utter insanity that remain etched in viewers’ minds long after the euphoria of victory has faded.
The two websites held an open call inviting creatives to interpret their favorite moments and the response was overwhelming—over 25 submissions and counting poured in from Europe and North America.
They range from Maradona’s controversial Hand of God in 1986 to Zinedine Zidane’s infamous headbutt against Marco Materazzi at the 2006 tournament, and perhaps our favorite, Paul the Octopus.
The late clairvoyant cephalopod was famous for correctly predicting the outcomes of all seven of the German national team’s matches during the 2010 World Cup, including their semi-final defeat to Spain.
Check out a few videos below and view more at the ‘Fives’ microsite.
