Like these atmospheric photographs of uninhabited castles and beautiful night shots of deserted WWII bunkers, photographer Gianluca Tesauro shows that abandoned buildings can be things of beauty too.
Together with artist Jorge Mañes Rubio, Tesauro spent the summer of 2013 documenting the faded splendor of abandoned buildings in Italy.
The pair visited Cilento National Park, the site of the devastating Irpinia earthquake in 1980 that resulted in several villages being abandoned.
Tesauro’s series ‘Buona Fortuna’, which means “Good Luck” in Italian, features once-opulent structures that have fallen into disrepair and neglect. Now a shadow of their former selves, the crumbling buildings stand as remnants of their past glories.
The duo intend to collaborate with local craftsmen on artworks to preserve the affected areas, and the series is meant to be a cultural draw for both locals and visitors.
