Photographs Reveal The Inspiration Behind Beautiful Traditional Japanese Sweets

Kyoto-born photographer Hajime Nakamura has a lovely series that reveals the inspiration behind traditional Japanese confectionery, known as wagashi.

Nakamura traveled around his hometown and around Japan, photographing the beautiful scenery and comparing them with pictures of pretty, delicate candies.

Placed side-by-side, it becomes apparent that the creators of the sweets derived inspiration from nature, from blossoming lotus flowers and luminous full moons, to brilliant sunsets and the Milky Way.

Nakamura has published his photographs in his most recent book Wagashi, which you can purchase here.

Admire some of his photographic comparisons below, and view more images at his blog.
