Iranian artist Babak Golkar has literally ‘grown’ meaning out of the traditional carpet in his set of carpet skyscraper works.
The work draws a relationship between the 2D and 3D while bringing together notions of architecture and art.
Most significantly, the art draws associations and attention to the on-going and much debated tensions that lie between Western and Eastern understanding.
This is done by way of the extruding structures atop of the elaborate traditional patterns on the carpet. These promote a dynamic expression and commentary on existing cultural barriers.
Furthermore, the resulting skyscrapers are symbolic not only of Western patriotism but also an allusion to the emerging oil-rich Arab countries.
