In Photographs: Elegance, Tranquility Of Myanmarese Landscape





Californian photographer Monica Denevan was struck by how the media frequently portrays Myanmar in a negative light.



Having seen the “meditative beauty of the landscape, the sensory chaos of the cities, and the quiet elegance of the people,” Denevan was determined to document aspects of Myanmar removed from all the chaos.



She sought to find “quiet, remote places that have been relatively untouched by industrial development,” so as to capture in stills “those whose culture and traditional way of life reflect a deep authenticity or bond with the past.”



The resulting series of stills, all done in black and white, evoke strength and beauty quite contrary to the mainstream notion of the country:
