Apple’s Latest Patent Application: Wirelessly Charging iPad SmartCover

The United States Patent and Trademark office published on 14 March 2013, an Apple patent application detailing the workings of a inductively charging iPad SmartCover system.

The SmartCover would, if eventually created, save the consumer from plugging in their Apple device for charging, as it would feature an inductive power transmitter that would enable it to pair with an inductive power transceiver embedded into the iPad.

While wireless charging systems are not a novel idea, this creation has yet to reach Apple-related products.

Apple further explained their patent application by stating that the SmartCover could employ “ambient power gathering devices, such as solar cells,” to gather ambient power (such as sunlight) that would be “stored internally in the flap for later inductive transfer.”
