‘Football Type’ is a non-profit book published by designer Rick Banks and co-authored by writer Sheridan Bird.
The book, which celebrates both football and typography, traces the “history and development of type in football”, from the hand-stitched jersey numbers in the 1930s to the custom fonts used by football clubs today.
“…so many people are passionate about football and design but I don’t think there’s ever been a book about football type,” explained Banks. “I contacted Bird, started collating official typefaces, and realized it was turning into quite a nice project.”
The profits made from selling the book will go to the UK charity Football Foundation, with the mission to “improve facilities, and build communities throughout England”.
There are only 1,000 limited edition copies of the book, and it can be purchased here.
