London-based Spanish designer Cristina Guardiola believes that food brings people together.
To help those on their first date overcome the anxiety and awkwardness often experienced in the scenario, she designed a set of cutlery that encourages interaction and good table etiquette.
‘First Date Cutlery’ collection consists of a soup spoon, fork and knife, and dessert spoon.
For starters, the shape of the soup spoon is designed to urge its user to drink soup the correct way—from the side of the spoon.
The knife and fork for the main course are designed to stimulate conversation, to get diners to find out more about each other. Magnets have been embedded in the fork and knife so that they can be crossed—often done mid of the meal, to show waiters that they are not done eating. This encourages the couple to take a short break from eating, to chat.
By dessert time, couples would have familiarized themselves with each other to be more comfortable.
Thus, Guardiola designed a dessert spoon in the shape of a sideways-oval—in order to provoke interaction and intimacy. The uniquely-shaped dessert spoon allows couples to share a dish and feed one another easily.
What do you think—would this cutlery set make eating on the first date less awkward?
