Photographer Manipulates Paint Into Colorful Patterns With Magnetic Fields

Swiss photographer Fabien Oefner’s latest experiment consists of mixing paint in a type of magnetic liquid called ferrofluid, placing it in a magnetic field, and taking pictures of the results.

Called “Millefiori”, each photographic experiment is only the size of a thumbnail, but shows how the magnetism in the fluid interacts with the field to determine how the colors mix together.

Each photograph captures a moment of transition between the mixed paint and the field, creating these psychedelic “brain-like” structures.
