Rejected Designs For World Famous Landmarks That Were Never Built

Arc de Triomphe, Paris

Some landmarks, such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the White House in Washington D.C., are so well-known that it is difficult to imagine that they could have looked very different if another architect’s design has been chosen.

Website io9 recently featured a series of rejected architectural designs for world famous landmarks that were never built—these sketches are fascinating because they shows how different things could have been.

For instance, Paris’ stunning Arc de Triomphe could have been a giant elephant that houses large rooms for balls and banquets, or that the Lincoln Memorial could have featured an impressive pyramid.

Scroll down—or head over here—for more of these rejected designs for the great architectural landmarks of today.

Do you prefer any of these designs over those that have actually been constructed?
