In a busy square in the city of Cēsis, between a train station, bus station, and library, sits a quaint little outdoor library built from recycled materials.
The ‘Story Tower’ is located at a spot where most commuters pass by to take a bus or train, allowing them to grab a book and be on their way.
Designed to “celebrate the individual reader and the notion of sharing and exchange”, it seeks to “create a dialogue between diverse groups and individuals of the town”.
Built by Summer school students and tutors from Riga Technical University (RTU), the ‘Story Tower’ was modeled after a giant lamp, creating a place where passersby can seek light and refuge in the comfort of books.
The library is made entirely from recyclable materials—soft timber lines the floor and walls, and the roof is fitted with Tetra Pak shingles.
The ‘Story Tower’ was meant to be a temporary library while the local library, which stocks it with books, undergoes refurbishment.
It will, however, remain as the library’s public out-post once refurbishments are complete.
