Tokyo-based designer Duncan Shotton has created a whimsical pencil that will turn the mundane chore of pencil-sharpening into a fun task to look forward to.
The eco-friendly Rainbow Pencils are not made from wood like regular pencils, but from layers of colored recycled paper that have been wrapped one on top of the other around a lead core.
Every time you sharpen one of these lovely pencils, you will be able to create beautiful paper shavings that look just like miniature rainbows.
“When I started this project, I was looking at ways in which, without interfering with [the pencil’s] basic function, I could improve such a standardised, accepted product to make people happier when they use it. That became rainbow pencils.
The designer has started a Kickstarter campaign for these happiness-inducing pencils—if successfully funded, the Rainbow Pencils will ship in time for Christmas.
