Have you ever wondered what causes old books to smell the way they do? Or what is it about the smell of new books that is so addictive? Compound Interest has broken down the complexities involved with an infographic, giving you some insight into the aroma of books.
According to Compound Interest, the smell of new books is primarily caused by three main sources: “the paper itself (and the chemicals used in its manufacture), the inks used to print the book, and the adhesives used in the book-binding process”. As a result, new books do not all smell the same, as there would be differences in the three main sources used.
Also, there are apparently ways and products to replicate the scent of books if you cannot get enough of your newly-acquired novel.
