A Web-Based Comic Book That Is Made With GIFs

Although most comic book fans would probably be content with the traditional illustrated panel that doesn’t move, Schoolgirls, a digital comic by French animator and illustrator Stephen Vuillemin should still strike them as interesting.

Using GIFs to “infuse panels with bursts of animation”, this new comic retains the original graphic appeal of the comic book but also adds an intriguing new element with small moving parts.

According to Vuillemin, he wanted people to be able to read his comics quickly without spending too much time on the pictures—“The animation is kind of a "bonus" to it, but you should be able to read it without looking at the animations.”

Reminding us of the moving photographs in the Harry Potter series, these animated comic panels is the bridge between print and full-fledged digital animation.

Although Schoolgirls is currently only available in French, Vuillemin is hoping to release a complete translated version by Christmas.

You can read more of this GIF-powered comic over here—some of the panels are in English.
