The blobfish (Psychrolutes marcidus)—a rare deep-sea fish—has been officially voted the ‘world’s ugliest animal’.

The campaign, ran by the Ugly Animal Preservation Society, saw more than 3,000 ballots cast—with the blobfish earning 795 votes.

“We’ve needed an ugly face for endangered animals for a long time, and I’ve been amazed by the public’s reaction,” said Simon Watt, the society’s president. “For too long the cute and fluffy animals have taken the limelight but now the blobfish will be a voice for the mingers who always get forgotten.”

Looking like a sad, melted face, the blobfish has been described as “a marine Jabba the Hut” by The Guardian. It can be found living off the coast of south-eastern Australia and Tasmania.

What do you think? Does it deserve its ‘world’s ugliest’ title?
