A Mobile Classroom In A Dumpster May Soon Be Cruising The Streets Of NYC

The ‘Inflato Dumpster’ is a mobile classroom in a dumpster created by New York City’s Department of Urban Betterment (DUB) to counter the wave of privatized and commoditized public space.

The dumpster is currently seeking Kickstarter funding. If funded, it will serve as a ‘pop-up’ learning lab on wheels, traveling around neighborhoods for five days this fall.

It has an inflatable roof that can be turned into a projection screen to show the demographics and information about the neighorhood it is currently in. Visitors are also invited to hold workshops to learn to create their own urban space solutions similar to the dumpster.

The DUB hopes participants will learn and explore the various urban techniques and strategies, and leave with the knowledge to design their own public spaces.
