British street artist Banksy’s 17th and latest work popped up in Williamsburg, and it is a decidedly lovely piece.

The graffiti of two geishas and a bonsai looks to be inspired by artist Kara Walker, who is known for her black cut-paper silhouettes.

The exact address is at Cook Street near Graham Avenue, contrary to Banksy’s erroneous declaration that it was at Bed Stuy. As with his previous works, this one was quickly vandalized by a man wielding a spray can. The tagger, who was identified as STF, was wrestled to the ground by the building manager but fled while the manager was calling the police. Later in the day, a group called The Wet Wipe Boys restored the piece.

Banksy is in New York for ‘Better Out Than In’, his month-long residency in which he creates one piece of street art for each day in October.

In the same post unveiling the geisha piece, he addressed the brazen NY Post headline that day which read “GET BANKSY”, with “I don’t read what I believe in the papers”.

With two weeks to go, Banksy's antics are being closely watched by admirers and detractors alike. There two groups he can count on to not support him – Mayor Michael Bloomberg is not impressed, and neither are the NYPD, who have warned that he will be charged with vandalism if caught.
