The team behind Auto Kandy has created a type of paint that will change the color of your car.
Called thermochromic paint, this pigment disappears with the increase in temperature, exposing the base coat of the car.
Using this paint to change the color of your car is tricky as the dye is sold in microcapsules, making it difficult for the painter to spread its particles evenly on the vehicle’s surface.
To create this two-toned Nissan, Auto Kandy painted the car with a base coat, overlapped it with clear paint, and applied the reactive paint on top.
When cold water is poured over the vehicle, the Nissan changes from vermillion to violet, giving the car an instant new look.
There are also two types of thermochromic paint: liquid crystals and leuco dyes. Although the former has a limited color range, it detects changes in temperature more accurately, while the latter has a wide color range but less temperature sensitivity.
Sadly, this cool color-change effect only lasts for four to six months as it wears off when it comes in contact with UV light. However, Auto Kandy states that a UV additive can be mixed into the paint to make it last longer.
