‘The Battle We Didn’t Choose’ is a blog/photo series started by Angelo Merendino to honor his late wife Jennifer and her heroic battle with breast cancer.
Diagnosed five months after their wedding, the series documents their pain, fear, life, and love for each other as they battled the disease together.
In one image, it shows the couple with smiles on their faces, but in another, it shows Jennifer in the hospital—head shaved with her face in intense pain.
“My photographs show this daily life,” wrote Merendino. “They humanize the face of cancer, on the face of my wife. They show the challenge, difficulty, fear, sadness and loneliness that we faced, that Jennifer faced, as she battled this disease.”
“Most important of all, they show our Love,” he added. “These photographs do not define us, but they are us.”
