American-Lebanese photographer Rania Matar entered the sanctuaries of girls around the world to produce a series of photographs titled ‘A Girl and Her Room’.
Matar had always been interested in the issues of girls and women, and she was inspired by the transformation of her own daughter from a child to a woman.
“I watched her passage from girlhood into adulthood, fascinated with the transformation taking place, the adult personality shaping up and a self-consciousness now replacing the carefree world she had known and lived in,” Matar explained on her website.
After casually photographing her daughter and her friends, she realized that most of the girls chose to be photographed in their rooms, as if “the girl herself seemed to be a part of the room”. Through her intimate photographs, she catches a glimpse of each girl’s private and true nature.
“I was discovering a person on the cusp of becoming one adult, but desperately holding on to the child she barely outgrew, a person on the edge between two worlds,” said Matar.
