‘The SCAR Project’: Intimate Portraits Of Young Breast Cancer Survivors

In a bid to raise awareness about breast cancer, fashion photographer David Jay embarked on a project in which he shot a series of large-scale portraits of young breast cancer survivors.

Dubbed ‘The SCAR Project’, the series features intimate photographs of young and brave women—from as young as 18-years-old to 35-years-old—with their ‘battle scars’ from mastectomies and chemotherapy, that symbolize their victory of overcoming the disease and reveal their strength and fighting spirit.

“For these young women, having their portrait taken seems to represent their personal victory over this terrifying disease,” Jay said. “It helps them reclaim their femininity, their sexuality, identity and power after having robbed of such an important part of it. Through these simple pictures, they seem to gain some acceptance of what has happened to them and the strength to move forward with pride.”

The SCAR Project pays tribute to the courage and spirit of these women—and is available as a book on Amazon.
