Belgian-born photographer Sofie Knijff has an inspiring portrait series titled ‘Translations’ showing children from various countries dressed as their dream professions.
The photos were taken over three years spent traveling around the world. Knijff captured children in South Africa, Brazil, India, Mali, Iceland, and Greenland, observing how their environments influenced each child’s choice.
Kulusuk, a village in Greenland that is undergoing rapid climate change, and the desert lands of Mali are poor, rural areas with extreme environmental conditions where life is fraught with hardship. The children in Greenland dressed as hunters while the children in Mali dressed as a marabout or doctor, an interesting fact given that Mali has one of the highest infant death rates in the world.
The portraits are at once moving and intimate, and one hopes that the children will realize their dreams one day.
