In the last of our ‘Year In Review’ series, we bring to you a round-up of the top 10 articles on our site in 2013. Our top 10 list of the most viewed and shared articles range from graphic design recreations of the ancient Kama Sutra, to adorable cat photos.

10. Designer Stops Texting, Sends Photos Of Hand-Written Calligraphic Messages











Designer Cristina Vanko created “Modern Day Snail Mail” when she decided to start texting handwritten calligraphic messages instead of typing text messages. With an old calligraphy pen belonging to her father, this designer texted her friends a snapshot of a handwritten note as text message replies. Through this project, Vanko reflects on how technology has changed the way we communicate.





9. ‘The Married Kama Sutra’ Depicts Humorous Marriage ‘Positions’











‘The Married Kama Sutra’ by Simon Rich and Farley Katz touts itself as “The World’s Least Erotic Manual”, and it probably is—as it presents humorous snippets of a married couple’s life, and the ways they keep the spark alive. It takes on the style of the ancient text, the Kama Sutra, only with scenarios that are completely changed.





8. The ‘Kama Sutra’ Of Sleeping Positions For Couples











Comics website Chaos Life has also given the Kama Sutra a new, wholesome spin. This truthful series of 16 comic representations illustrates the different positions that couples take on when sleeping.





7. Minimalistic Visualizations Explain Differences In Eastern And Western Cultures











Visual designer Yang Liu’s series of graphics that explain the differences in Eastern and Western culture are incredibly spot-on. Born in China but raised in Germany, Yang Liu explains the cultural differences based on her own experience. She uses simple symbols and shapes to convey just how different the two cultures are.





6. Adorable Photographs Of A Tiny Baby Squirrel Resting In Odd Places











On a work trip to Sri Lanka, BBC documentary filmmaker Paul Williams formed an unlikely friendship with a baby squirrel after it was separated from its mother. He named the squirrel Rob, and even allowed his new furry friend to take naps on his camera and in his coffee mug.





5. LOL: Man Pranks Facebook Users By Recreating Their Profile Pictures











Reddit user CasinoRoy pulled a massive prank on the Internet when he imitated strangers on Facebook by recreating their profile pictures. After doing a search for people who share the same name as him, he mimicked their poses and outfits, took a photo of himself, used it as his profile picture, before sending them a friend request just to creep them out.





4. Popular Cartoon Characters Like You’ve Never Seen Them Before











California-based artist Coran ‘Kizer’ Stone reimagined popular cartoon characters like ‘Mario’, ‘Pokemon’, ‘Popeye’ and ‘Calvin and Hobbes’ in these incredible illustrations. Stone’s dynamic and action-packed style perfectly complement his creative take on the characters.





3. Heartwarming Photos Tell Of A Friendship Between A Girl And A Cat











Russian photographer Andy Prokh captured adorable photos of his daughter Catherine and her growing up years with their family pet, a gray British Shorthair cat. This series shows Catherine and the cat sharing an undeniably strong chemistry, exploring and taking on the world.





2. Illustrations Of Unusual And Rarely Spoken Words











Irish illustrators James and Michael Fizgarald, also known as The Project Twins, came up with illustrations that visually depict words that are rarely spoken or heard of. In ‘A-Z of Unusual Words’, the meaning behind each word is defined visually and presented as a whimsical poster.





1. Animals Photoshopped To Create Hilarious New Species











Reddit user gyyp photoshopped different animals together, and as a byproduct, created downright weird (but totally hilarious) species of never-seen-before animals. His series of ‘Weird Animals’ include pairings of a lion with a guinea pig, a shark with a horse, and a duck with an elephant, just to name a few. Some look truly frightening, while others are quite adorable.
