When Dainty Ceramics Meet Gore: Victorian Lady Figures Covered In Blood And Guts

If you are accustomed to the image of smiling Victorian lady figurines, these wonderfully gory ceramic ladies by Edinburgh-based artist Jessica Harrison will make you do a double take.

Her gruesomely elegant figures are depicted with neck wounds, ripped hearts, and decapitated heads, while smiling sweetly and remaining unperturbed at their bloodied petticoats and dresses. They are made all the more disturbing as ceramics are a traditionally dainty art form.

The ceramic ladies are the latest pieces from Harrison, whom we previously covered here.

They are currently on display as part of Body & Soul: New International Ceramics at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. The exhibition focuses on the human figure in contemporary ceramics.
