US-based artist Gregory Halili has created a series of intricate hand-carved and painted skulls on mother of pearl shells.
Drawing inspiration from the “the lush vegetation and tropical wildlife” of his native land, the Philippines, he combines “the human form with the natural world” through his work.
These gold and black-lip shells that are picked from the Philippines are first carved and painted with oil paints to create highlights in different “tones of colors” to form the skulls—the project is “an exploration of life, death, and rebirth”.
