An Intricately Carved Chair That Projects A Shadow Of A Sitting Woman

We have previously featured Japanese artist Kumi Yamashita’s lovely sheet of cloth that projects a woman’s shadow.

Her new work is made out of cherry wood and it shows the shadow of a woman sitting on a chair. The impressive sculpture took months to complete, starting with a month of sketching to achieve the right composition and scale, and followed by months of carving, sanding, painting and adding the light fixture and other finishing touches.

When you view her piece straight on, it looks like two simple pieces of wood, but from the side, you’ll notice the intricate carvings on the chair and an almost ghostly figure in the shadows when the light hits the sculpture at just the right angle.

Scroll down to see this impressive artwork and visit her website to see more of her play on light and shadows.
