Indian engineering students Niladri Basu, Rimpi Tripathy and Manisha Mohan, have invented an anti-rape lingerie which is designed to help protect women from sexual assaults.
Their invention, called the Society Harnessing Equipment (SHE), is capable of emitting 3,800kV shockwaves up to 82 times on would-be attackers. To protect the wearer, the inner side of the undergarment is lined with polymer.
Moreover, in the event of an attack, the lingerie will alert the police and the woman's family of her whereabouts, via the Global Positioning System (GPS) and the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM).
The trio shared how they had initially intended to incorporate the anti-rape system in a woman's underpants.
However, they decided to fit the system into the bra instead, after their research findings revealed that rapists and molesters usually aim their attack on a woman's bosom before any other part of her body.
The young inventors from SRM University in Chennai, one of India's top engineering schools, hope that the device will grant women “freedom from [unpleasant] situations faced in public places.”
The SHE will be available for mass production by the end of April 2013.
