Artist Hand-Painted A Constellation Of 47,000 Stars Onto Museum’s Ceiling

After undergoing a renovation that lasted a decade, the renowned Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands re-opened last month.

To complement one of its most famous artworks, Rembrandt’s Night Watch, the antechambers next to the iconic painting’s gallery is now home to a stunning new installation by Glasgow-based artist Richard Wright.

Hand-painting 47,000 stars onto the ceiling of these antechambers—with a little help from his assistants—Wright transformed the flat surface into a mesmerizing constellation that appears to curve and bend.

Unlike some of his other projects, which only lasted as long as the exhibition, this latest piece from the award-winning artist would exist alongside Rembrandt’s masterpiece for as long as it is housed at the Rijksmuseum.

We can only imagine how physically strenuous it must have been to lie on one’s back and paint the same design over and over again—scroll down for more images of this impressive installation.
