Shanghai-based artist Yang Yongliang has given traditional Chinese landscape paintings from the Song dynasty a modern twist.
At first glance, these photos seem to be stunning traditional Chinese paintings made in black and white—however, on closer inspection, they actually depict scenes from modern cities.
Trained in traditional Chinese ink painting, Yang re-constructs each piece with digital techniques, inserting cranes, traffic signs, flyovers and the glow of city lights to make his works come to life.
Each photo comments on the conflicting views that an average Chinese person may hold while living in the world today, as they are caught between traditional values and a fast-paced, modern lifestyle.
