With a background in photography and textiles, Joanne Arnett has combined the two disciplines by weaving photorealistic mugshots on a loom.
She first experimented with this medium at Kent State University, taking to the technique after completing her first piece of photographic textile art.
While the Ohio-based artist is interested in the moments where “life has slipped out of control”, she does not use real mugshots for reference, preferring to sketch till a face feels “genuine”.
Arnett also does research, planning out the colors of each work of art before execution—each woven portrait takes 4 weeks to make and every piece is titled after the subject’s sentence—for instance, Six Months Probation.
